How to Respond to the Call for Prayer (Adhan) in Islam: A Comprehensive Guide
In Islam, the Adhan (also called the call to prayer) is one of the most symbolic and important practices. It is a ritual that signals the beginning of the five daily prayers (Salah). The Adhan is not only a reminder for Muslims to prepare for their obligatory worship, but it also carries deep spiritual significance. When Muslims hear the Adhan, they are encouraged to respond in specific ways, as taught by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
In this article, we will delve into the meaning of the Adhan, the proper etiquette for responding to it, and the spiritual rewards associated with this practice. We will also explore the historical and cultural significance of the Adhan, its structure, and how it connects with Islamic prayer.
What is the Adhan?
The Adhan is a call to prayer made by a muezzin (the person appointed to call the prayers) from a mosque. It is recited five times a day at prescribed times: Fajr (dawn), Dhuhr (midday), Asr (afternoon), Maghrib (sunset), and Isha (night). The purpose of the Adhan is to remind Muslims that it is time to stop their daily activities and prepare for prayer.
The words of the Adhan are as follows:
Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar (God is the Greatest, God is the Greatest)
Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah)
Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah (I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah)
Hayya ‘ala-s-Salah (Hasten to the prayer)
Hayya ‘ala-l-Falah (Hasten to success)
Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar (God is the Greatest, God is the Greatest)
La ilaha illallah (There is no god but Allah)
The Adhan is not only a simple reminder but a powerful and melodious proclamation of faith. The words carry a deep message of submission to Allah, and the repetition of certain phrases highlights the importance of prayer in a Muslim’s life.
The Significance of Responding to the Adhan
Responding to the Adhan is a highly recommended act in Islam, as it follows the tradition of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). In a hadith narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr (RA), the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
“When you hear the Mu’adhdhin, say what he says; then send blessings upon me, for whoever sends blessings upon me once, Allah will send blessings upon him tenfold.” (Sahih Muslim)
Responding to the Adhan is not obligatory, but it is considered a Sunnah (a recommended action). By doing so, Muslims engage in a form of worship that increases their rewards and fosters a deeper connection with Allah.
How to Respond to the Adhan
When the Adhan is recited, Muslims are encouraged to follow a specific etiquette for responding. Here is a step-by-step guide:
1. Stop All Activities
When the Adhan begins, it is recommended to pause whatever you are doing and give full attention to the call. This demonstrates respect for the Adhan and prepares the mind and heart for prayer.
2. Repeat After the Muezzin
The basic etiquette for responding to the Adhan is to repeat the phrases recited by the muezzin. For each phrase, respond with the same words, except for the two instances when the muezzin says “Hayya ‘ala-s-Salah” (Hasten to prayer) and “Hayya ‘ala-l-Falah” (Hasten to success). In these cases, the response should be:
“La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah”
(There is no power and no strength except with Allah)
This response reflects the belief that all strength and ability come from Allah, and it is by His will that we can perform the prayer and succeed in this life and the hereafter.
3. Send Salawat (Blessings) Upon the Prophet
After the Adhan is completed, it is recommended to send blessings upon Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This is based on the Prophet’s advice mentioned in the hadith above. The best form of this is to recite:
“Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala aali Muhammadin kama sallaita ‘ala Ibrahima wa ‘ala aali Ibrahima, innaka Hamidun Majeed. Allahumma barik ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala aali Muhammadin kama barakta ‘ala Ibrahima wa ‘ala aali Ibrahima, innaka Hamidun Majeed.”
(Translation: O Allah, send Your grace, honor, and mercy upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You did upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are praiseworthy and glorious.)
4. Recite the Dua After the Adhan
After sending blessings upon the Prophet (PBUH), it is highly recommended to recite a specific dua (supplication). This dua asks Allah to grant the Prophet the highest rank in paradise, known as “Al-Wasilah.” The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“Whoever says after hearing the call to prayer: ‘Allahumma Rabba hadhihi-d-da‘wat it-taammah, was-salatil qa’imah, ati Muhammadan al-Wasilah wal-Fadilah, wab‘ath-hu maqaman mahmudan illadhi wa’adtah’, my intercession will be granted for him on the Day of Resurrection.” (Sahih Bukhari)
(Translation: O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and the established prayer, grant Muhammad the Wasilah (intercession) and the Fadilah (virtue) and raise him to the praised position which You have promised him.)
5. Make Personal Duas
After completing the response to the Adhan, it is also a good time to make personal duas. This time is regarded as an opportunity when duas are highly likely to be accepted, based on the blessings associated with the call to prayer.
The Rewards of Responding to the Adhan
Responding to the Adhan is not merely a ritualistic act; it carries great rewards. According to several hadiths, responding to the Adhan leads to:
- Forgiveness of Sins: Engaging in the practice of repeating the words of the Adhan and following it with salawat and supplications helps purify one’s soul and is a means for the forgiveness of sins.
- Intercession on the Day of Judgment: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) promised that those who recite the dua after the Adhan will receive his intercession on the Day of Judgment.
- Closeness to Allah: By stopping what one is doing and focusing on responding to the Adhan, a person demonstrates sincerity and devotion to Allah, which helps cultivate a deeper spiritual connection.
- Multiplication of Rewards: Every act of worship in Islam, no matter how small, brings reward. By following the proper etiquette and responding to the Adhan, a Muslim earns continuous reward, which can be multiplied several times over.
The Spiritual Importance of the Adhan
The Adhan is much more than a simple call to prayer. It is a reminder of the presence of Allah in our lives and our obligation to turn to Him regularly throughout the day. Responding to the Adhan in the manner prescribed by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is an act of worship that not only increases one’s connection with Allah but also brings countless spiritual rewards.
While the words of the Adhan are simple, the practice of listening, responding, and acting upon it carries profound significance for Muslims worldwide. It reinforces the values of discipline, humility, and submission to Allah. By properly responding to the Adhan, Muslims are not only preparing themselves for prayer but also engaging in an act of worship that can help purify their hearts, strengthen their faith, and bring them closer to Allah.
The next time you hear the Adhan, pause, listen attentively, and respond as taught by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). In doing so, you align yourself with centuries of Islamic tradition, and you participate in an act that connects Muslims globally in their shared devotion to Allah.
